The Alexander Valley AVA sits at the top of Sonoma County with about 15,000 acres of prime vineyard area among the total 76,000 total acres in this AVA. The variety of microclimates allows for a range of grape varieties to thrive on its soils.  While Cabernet Sauvignon reigns supreme on the gravelly terrain of the valley floor, the Alexander Valley AVA also produces superb Zinfandel, Merlot, and notable Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc. Even the cooler-climate varieties Gewürztraminer and Riesling have made inroads here. The climatic conditions are shaped by the influence of evening and morning coastal fogs that allow the grapes to recover from the hot mid-day temperatures, in what is overall a relatively warm growing area. Wines of Alexander Valley are distinguished by their approachability, rather than longevity, as well as by their richness and voluptuousness- Cabernet Sauvignon is noted for its chocolate overtones and lushly fruity mouthfeel. Recommended Producers: E & J Gallo’s and Kendall-Jackson’s investment in the area has helped raise Alexander Valley’s profile. Other notable wineries include Clos du Bois, Simi Winery and Chateau Souverain.
