About BBX

What is BBX?

BBX is our fine wine exchange. With over 40,000 wines available to bid on, and tens of thousands listed for sale at any one time, it has become the best place to grow your wine collection safe in the knowledge that every wine has been authenticated and comes with a quality guarantee.

The sale process is managed by Berry Bros. & Rudd from start to finish and sellers pay a 10% commission. There is no fee for buyers. Sellers can offer any eligible wines in their collection, as long as it is currently stored In Bond in one of the Berry Bros. & Rudd warehouses, and is in an unbroken case.

Customers set the price and specify the quantity they want to sell. Buyers can agree to buy straight away at the set price or make an offer at a lower price by placing a bid. You can also place a bid on wines that aren’t actively for sale, but are stored in Berry Bros. & Rudd warehouses. These bids may have a lower chance of being accepted, but this can be a good way to find unusual wines or get a great deal. We would recommend making realistic offers, or sellers are likely to ignore your bids and may sell the wine to someone else.

To place a bid, you will need to register as a bidder . Log in or create an account and then follow the prompts for bidder registration.

Does the Berry Bros. & Rudd Quality Guarantee & Policy apply to wines bought with BBX?

Yes. We are committed to providing our customers with an unsurpassed level of service and are equally committed to ensuring we provide a safe and legal product. If a wine is corked (affected by cork taint) or faulty, we will, in the first instance, offer a replacement bottle; or if we are unable to replace the bottle from our stocks, we will offer a refund or credit to the replacement value of the wine. We will ask for the return of the bottle in question. Many wines are sold to drink young so we offer a simple drinking guide to help clarify the optimum drinking time of all our wines. If a wine has been kept too long or stored inappropriately by you (or by us, on your instructions), we may not be able to offer a refund and will not be liable to you, as set out in “ Our liability to you ” section.

If you believe a wine to be faulty please contact us on 0800 280 2440 or email us at bbr@bbr.com and we will be happy to make arrangements to have the wine collected and tested. In order to benefit from our guarantee, you must tell us within a reasonable time of discovery that a product is faulty and, in any event:

  • where products are purchased from our physical stores, within 12 months of purchase;
  • where products are purchased on our website, within 12 months of delivery or collection; or
  • where products are stored in our cellars, once withdrawn from our cellars, the shorter of (i) the remainder of its drinking window, and (ii) 12 months from withdrawal. For the avoidance of doubt, where there is no remaining drinking window, there is no guarantee.

If you are a consumer, you have statutory rights if something is wrong with our products and those rights are not affected by this guarantee. Subject to “Our liability to you” section, you have a statutory right to reject our products within 30 days if our products are faulty and you will be entitled to a full refund. Alternatively, you can ask us to replace the product and, if we're unable to do so, we will offer you a full or partial refund (subject to statutory limitations). Please contact us using the same details above to exercise your consumer rights. For detailed information please visit the Citizens Advice website www.citizensadvice.org.uk .

These inspection guidelines set the threshold for what Berry Bros. & Rudd define as minimum acceptability of quality and condition. All wines will automatically be opened and inspected on receipt or will be inspected prior to confirmation of sale and approved against these guidelines. If you do not consent to your wines being opened and inspected in this way Berry Bros. & Rudd reserve the right to refuse receipt. Why are there sometimes differences in price between wines listed on your website?

Each seller sets the price of wines they choose to sell with BBX, so the price of wines may fluctuate between different sellers. The price shown on BBX may also differ from the price Berry Bros. & Rudd set. Wines sold with BBX are all sold In Bond, which means Duty and VAT haven’t yet been paid on them. It’s important to consider that cost when comparing the price of wine from different sources.

Bidding with BBX

How do I start bidding with BBX?

You will need to register as a bidder and provide your card details before you place a bid. You can place a bid on any wines that are currently for sale with BBX or any wines that are stored in our warehouse. Your bids are more likely to be accepted on wines that are for sale, but if you make a strong offer then you may be able to buy wines that aren’t currently listed for sale. If the wine is for sale and you make an offer at the asking price, the order will be processed immediately. If you place a bid below asking price, or bid on a wine that’s not currently offered for sale, the seller will have the opportunity to review your bid to decide whether to accept it.

How long are bids valid for?

Your bids will remain active for 60 days. You can change or cancel your bids as long as they haven’t already been accepted by the seller. We’ll email you updates and let you know when they’re about to expire. If you’re outbid, we’ll send you an email and you’ll have the opportunity to increase your bid. If the wine has no bids, you can set your bid for any value. If the wine does have bids, you must choose a higher amount than the current highest bid. The only other restriction is that your bid must be at least 70% of the market price.

Why am I not receiving any bid alerts?

To receive bids on wines you have stored in our warehouse you need to be registered to sell. You also need to manage your alerts.

Can I see whether there are live bids on any of my cellared wines?

Yes, log in to your account and head to “My BBX” to see what if you have had any bids placed on your wines

Can I see details of bids placed on wines not cellared with Berry Bros. & Rudd?

No. Once you’ve accepted a bid you are unable to cancel it.

If I list more than one case of a particular wine on BBX, can I choose whether to accept bids on less than my listed quantity?

When a buyer places a bid they stipulate the case quantity they wish to bid for. The case quantity cannot exceed the total number of cases available to be bid on. Bids are matched to the requested quantity so sellers are unable to accept bids lower than the quantity requested by the seller.

For example, if a seller is selling two cases of a wine and a receives a bid offer for the two cases then the seller can accept the offer for two cases but cannot accept an offer for only one case.

Yes. When you register to bid you can set the way you pay either by Berry Bros. & Rudd account or by Credit/Debit card. If the value of your bid order exceeds your account balance, then payment will be split between your account and the debit/credit card that you nominated when you registered as a BBX bidder. Please note, customers who have an agreed credit facility with Berry Bros. & Rudd are not able to use this to buy BBX wines.

What happens if my saved card details expire?

Bids can only be placed with valid saved card details. If you attempt to make a bid and your saved card details have expired, you will be prompted to supply new card details before you can proceed.

What happens if I am outbid?

You will receive an email alert if you are outbid. You can then place a higher bid if you would like to. A bid higher than yours may either be accepted by a seller or may expire, and if this happens your bid becomes the highest bid again. Please note that your bid remains valid for 60 days regardless of whether it’s the current highest bid.

Are there any bidding restrictions?

Bids must be at least £5 higher* than the highest bid or at least 70% of the market price, whichever is higher.
For example, if the market price is £100 the minimum bid price will be £70. However, if there is already a bid for £80, the minimum bid price will be £85. We restrict bids to maintain a fair selling environment.

*This increment becomes £10 for bids above £1000.
