Description
The 2023 Clos l’Eglise is the usual blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc, picked on September 12 and finishing the following day for the Merlot, with the Cabernet Franc plucked from vine on October 1.
It has a refined, very well-defined bouquet that is pure and poised, and the terroir is coming through stronger than its stablemate, Poesia, at the moment. The palate is very smooth on the entry, with a touch of dark chocolate infusing the black fruit. It is quite powerful in style, but the acidity keeps the leash tight. Possessing very good length, this should match the previous vintage in quality.

About this wine
Merlot
The most widely planted grape in Bordeaux and a grape that has been on a relentless expansion drive throughout the world in the last decade. Merlot is adaptable to most soils and is relatively simple to cultivate. It is a vigorous naturally high yielding grape that requires savage pruning - over-cropped Merlot-based wines are dilute and bland. It is also vital to pick at optimum ripeness as Merlot can quickly lose its varietal characteristics if harvested overripe.

Pomerol
With 150 or so producers and roughly 740 hectares of vineyards, the smallest of Bordeaux's major appellations is home to myriad bijou domaines – many making little more than 1,000 cases per annum. If the topography and architecture of Pomerol are typical, the style of its wines is anything but. The best vineyards are planted on a seam of rich clay extending across the raised plateau of Pomerol from the boundary of St Emilion.

Chateau Clos l'Eglise
Pomerol - owned by S.Garcan-Cathiard, this 6 ha property produces on average 2,800 cases per year. Located in the centre-east of the Pomerol appellation, next to Ch.Clinet, the property shares a similar climate to that enjoyed by both St.Emilion & Pomerol: more continental than the maritime Médoc with generally more spring rainfall, though less in summer & winter. Its vineyards (Merlot 57%; Cabernet Franc 36%; Cabernet Sauvignon 7%) lie on sandy-gravel topsoils, underpinned by a hard-pan clay subsoil. Fermentation in wooden vats before 24 months of maturation in new oak barrels.
