2023 Château de Pez, St Estèphe, Bordeaux

Description

Blend: 61% Cabernet Sauvignon; 38% Merlot; 1% Cabernet Franc.

This property, under the same ownership as Ch. Pichon Comtesse, has undergone extensive changes, including an extensive replanting project, favouring Cabernet Sauvignon; and a new winery, allowing for plot-by-plot vinification.

The 2023 shows impressive purity of fruit, with layers of cassis, plum and sweet spice held in check by an impressive tannic structure. The DNA of the property and craftsmanship of winemaker Nicolas Glumineau is starting to shine through. This is perhaps the most impressive wine here since the new ownership.

Saint-Estèphe

Saint-Estèphe

Saint-Estèphe is the northernmost of the most important communes of the Médoc, bordering Pauillac on its southernmost border, with only a gully and stream separating it from Ch. Lafite Rothschild. The wines can appear austere in youth, but the best typically display good depth of colour, pronounced acidity and tannins in youth, and are exceptionally long-lived. At their best, they are the equal of almost any Bordeaux.
