2023 Château Rauzan-Ségla, Margaux, Bordeaux

Description

Blend: 85% Cabernet Sauvignon; 13.5% Cabernet Franc; 1.5% Petit Verdot.

This is an incredibly harmonious expression of Rauzan-Ségla, and without doubt one of the wines of the vintage. It is truly exceptional. Cabernet Sauvignon is “the centrepiece of the vintage”, according to the property. It provides layers of concentration, with a backbone of beguiling dark fruits, cedar, liquorice and violet. The palate gradually builds and is kept in focus by fine, supple tannins.

The largest commune in the Médoc, it encompasses the communes of Cantenac, Soussans, Arsac and Labaude, in addition to the village of Margaux itself. Its finest examples are paragons of refinement and subtlety which have few parallels in Bordeaux.

However, while the fortunes of Mouton prospered in the 20th century, culminating in its elevation to 1er Cru status in 1973, Rauzan-Ségla`s reputation dwindled and a succession of disappointing wines were produced.
