2023 Château d'Armailhac, Pauillac, Bordeaux

Description

Blend: 70% Cabernet Sauvignon; 15% Merlot; 13% Cabernet Franc; 2% Petit Verdot.

With 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, this represents not only the style of Left Bank Bordeaux in 2023, but also the changes and investment here, as part of the Ch. Mouton Rothschild portfolio. Technical director Lucie Lauilhé has made a statement of intent in defining the future direction of the wine. It is pure, tight and precise – the epitome of 2023’s best Cabernet Sauvignon. There is still the old-vine Cabernet Franc providing lift and perfume, and there is still the slightly sinewy twist in the mid-palate. But this is also a more articulate expression of its terroir than before. It is admirable and impressive.

Pauillac

Pauillac

The aristocrat of the Médoc boasts 75 percent of the region’s First Growths, with Grand Cru Classés representing 84 percent of production. Pauillac's First Growths each have their own unique characteristics: Ch. Lafite Rothschild produces the region’s most aromatically-complex and subtly-flavoured wine, while – with its high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon – Ch. Mouton Rothschild can produce a decadently rich, fleshy and exotic wine.
