Isabel Estate is located in the Wairau Valley in Marlborough, New Zealand and benefits from plenty of intense sunshine but an overall cool temperature. This makes for ripe grapes with high acidity and wonderfully intense wines. This Sauvignon Blanc is a beautifully aromatic example, yet manages not to be overwhelming, with an elegance not always found in this part of the world. The fresh acidity makes this a versatile food wine, ideally suited to fish dishes, poultry or creamy goat’s cheese.

Tasting note

Award-winning winemaker Jeremy McKenzie of Isabel Estate has, once again, made a superb wine for us. A fine nose of freshly cut grass with green and yellow apple precedes a palate which is bright and full of energy. It is fabulously cleansing, moving into gooseberry and a tart kiwi twist. There is a lovely, stony purity here. This is a restrained, elegant wine that will make you want another sip.

About this wine

Sauvignon Blanc

An important white grape in Bordeaux and the Loire Valley that has now found fame in New Zealand and now Chile. It thrives on the gravelly soils of Bordeaux and is blended with Sémillon to produce fresh, dry, crisp  Bordeaux Blancs, as well as more prestigious Cru Classé White Graves. It is also blended with Sémillon, though in lower proportions, to produce the great sweet wines of Sauternes. It performs well in the Loire Valley and particularly on the well-drained chalky soils found in Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé, where it produces bone dry, highly aromatic, racy wines, with grassy and sometimes smoky, gunflint-like nuances.

Isabel Estate

Isabel Estate was established by Mike and Robyn Tiller in 1980 with the ambition of producing premium, classic grape varieties in Marlborough, New Zealand's largest wine area, which is situated at the top of the South Island. Prior to the 1994 vintage, Isabel Estate supplied Marlborough’s leading wine producers - including Cloudy Bay - with grapes, but since then has produced its own single-vineyard wines. The estate is now owned by the Australian drinks company, Pinnacle, which has focused on investment in the vineyards and winery since it took over in 2014. Ex-Villa Maria winemaker Jeremy McKenzie is now in charge of the wines and is dedicated to ensuring the high quality that is synonymous with this estate.
