2022 Berry Bros. & Rudd Puligny-Montrachet by Domaine Jean-Louis Chavy, Burgundy

Description

Located in the southern part of the Côte de Beaune, the village of Puligny-Montrachet itself forms a section of the renowned Côte d’Or. Together with its neighboring village, Chassagne, Puligny-Montrachet derives its name from the esteemed Grand Cru vineyard of Le Montrachet. While the village produces a small quantity of red wine, its acclaim primarily rests on its age-worthy white wines, and this bottle is a prime example. It is crafted for us by Jean-Louis Chavy, whose family has a long-standing history in the region.

Tasting note

Our Puligny-Montrachet has been made in collaboration with Jean-Louis Chavy. It comes from the fruit of 10 parcels of vines scattered throughout this famous village. Fermented and aged in (20% new) oak barrels, this is floral, zesty and fresh with subtle notes of vanilla spice. It glides across the palate with a creamy, lacy texture before finishing with a flourish of tangy freshness.

Domaine Jean-Louis Chavy

Jean-Louis Chavy is one of the sons of Gerard Chavy, and now runs his own Domaine. His brother Alain, now runs Domaine Gerard Chavy on his own. Jean-Louis and Alain have split the families vineyards up between them with them sharing the Bourgogne Blanc, village Puligny Montrachet, the lieu-dit Charmes, as well as Premiers Crus Champs Gain, Clavoillons, and Folatieres vineyards. In addition Jean-Louis has control of the Premier Cru Perrieres parcel, while Alain kept the Pucelles parcel. The winery was finished in 2004 and the winemaking and ageing style is traditional. It is early days to talk of a house style for Jean-Louis, but his wine are so far very elegant and without any noticeable oak influence.
