2006 Château Pontet-Canet, Pauillac, Bordeaux

Description

Alfred Tesseron is currently producing astonishing wines that are easily of Super-Second Growth quality. This is one of the great wines of 2006. The work he has done in the vineyards, using organic and in some cases biodynamic methods, has clearly paid off in this tricky year. The wine has a spicy, brambly fruit nose followed by a tight-knit palate packed full of blackcurrant and raspberry fruit with cedar and coffee hints. The wine's focus, purity and minerality acts as a perfect counterpoint to its harmonious richness. This is an utterly complete wine, and a must-buy.

Tasted at Bordeaux Index's annual 10-Year On tasting in London. The 2006 Chteau Pontet-Canet has an extremely pure, vivacious, perfumed bouquet with crushed violets infusing the blueberry and blackberry fruit. But it is all about the detail and precision in this wine. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip in the mouth: lightly toasted black fruit, dried orange peel, cedar and a pinch of white pepper. This feels very cohesive and poised with just a touch of mint entering right on the finish. What a great wine from Alfred Tesseron and Jean-Michel Comme. Go grab the corkscrew now, but don't feel that this wine has to be opened for another 5-6 years. Tasted January 2016.Neil Martin - 30/05/2016

The 2006 is a wine to stockpile, especially for those in their thirties and forties as it needs another decade to reach maturity, after which it should keep for 30+ years. This vineyard, just south of Mouton Rothschild, has produced an opaque bluish/purple-colored 2006 with an extraordinarily pure nose of graphite, charcoal, sweet creme de cassis, and a hint of scorched earth. Incredible concentration, stunning richness, and a 60-second finish result in a wine that transcends the vintage as well as this estate’s 1855 classification. This enormously endowed, modern day classic is a legend in the making. robert_parker - Wine Advocate - Feb-2009

Chateau Pontet-Canet

Château Pontet-Canet is a large Pauillac estate that can trace its origins back to 1725, when Jean-François Pontet gave his name to the estate he had acquired. The wine was not château-bottled until 1972 and in 1975 the property was sold to Guy Tesseron, of the Tesseron family, one of the finest exponents of luxury, very old, aged Cognacs (Cognac Tesseron). The Tesserons also own Château Lafon-Rochet in St-Estephe. Today, Château Pontet-Canet is owned and run by Alfred and Michel Tesseron.
