2021 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Roussanne, Vieilles Vignes, Château de Beaucastel, Rhône

Description

This comes from a three-hectare plot of extremely old Roussanne vines, planted in 1909. The nose is rich and fragrant, with notes of red apple skin that intermingle with ripe pineapple, fresh apricots, orange zest, and a hint of sherbet. The palate is soft and creamy, bringing pear tart, apricot coulis, and quince fruit. While glossy, rich, and tropical, this is also wonderful energy to the wine, and it is by no means cloying. A hint of bitter almond and briny salinity brings a balanced and mouth-watering finish. This can be enjoyed now, or cellared a decade or more for a richer, more buttery style. Drink 2023 to 2030+.

About this wine

Roussanne

Roussanne is one of the most important white grape varieties in the Rhône Valley. It is a particularly pernickety grape to cultivate being a notoriously low yielder as well as being highly susceptible to rot. It is difficult to ripen, and seemingly prone to oxidation at every opportunity. Roussanne's name comes from its russet-coloured skin and it produces richly aromatic wines, often with fruit characteristics of lime and blossom.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Châteauneuf-du-Pape

The largest and most important appellation in the southern Rhône, with more than 3,200 hectares of vineyards and over 80 growers, Châteauneuf-du-Pape produces more wine than the whole of the northern Rhône combined. The gloriously rich red wines, redolent of the heat and herbs of the south, are enhanced by the complexity which comes from blending several of the 14 permitted grape varieties including Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah.
