Description
It is a little confusing that Luigi Baudana came from the village of Baudana and owned vines in a vineyard called Baudana. That must mean the wines have a sense of place. But these wines have also long been a stand-bearer for the village and Serralunga. The vineyard is on the cusp between the Tortonian and Helvetian soil types and combine a ferrous bite with a broader and richer texture. There is some Serralunga muscularity, but this is very fine indeed.

The 2020 Barolo Baudana opens with a burst of plump, juicy, red-toned fruit. Bright acids and persistent tannins are a reminder we’re in Serralunga. The 2020 is going to need a few years to come together, but it is a relatively accessible wine for this part of the appellation. The purity of the fruit here is lovely. With fruit from Serralunga d'Alba, the Luigi Baudana 2020 Barolo Baudana is a bold and ripe expression with dark currant, black cherry, sweet orange peel and crushed red rose. Soft, earthy layers appear on the mid-palate with hints of spicy licorice. All of that intensity, with soil, fruit and spice, swells over the palate, giving this wine an impactful character. Nebbiolo is the grape behind the Barolo and Barbaresco wines and is hardly ever seen outside the confines of Piedmont. It takes its name from "nebbia" which is Italian for fog, a frequent phenomenon in the region.

Luigi Baudana
With only 2.6 hectares of vineyards, Luigi Baudana is one of the smallest cantinas in Serralunga d’Alba, and has been managed by GD Vajra since 2009. Production is still in the tiny Baudana winery – quite literally in the family garage. The wines carry Luigi Baudana’s fierce Serralunga character, but have benefited from Vajra’s influence, which emphasises classical structures, vivid fruity purity, passion and authenticity. While easy to miss, the quality of these ensures they are the stars of the future. Quantities are tiny, so please contact your account manager to register interest.
