2020 Barbaresco, Montestefano, Luigi Giordano, Piedmont, Italy
- Red
- Dry
- Full Bodied
- Nebbiolo
Description
Planted in the 1960s, this is Giordano’s proudest cru and the first single-vineyard site to be classified in Barbaresco. Pure south-facing, harvest is always the latest here, as the vines need longer to reach full phenolic maturation, resulting in greater complexity. A whooping 45-day maceration gives the 2020 weight and structure. The palate has a pure vertical fruit depth here and a savoury herbal charm, yet tightly bound in cool, complex earthy tannins. Needs time.

Blood orange, red plum, with a little touch of heat. This is immensely approachable now, but the tannins suggest patience is needed for this wine to blossom truly. The nose is tight, densely floral and bright. The palate is densely compacted, with fine tannins, stunning depth and savoury spice. This is a wine to convert any Pinot Noir fan to Barbaresco.
