2020 Barolo, Bricco Ambrogio, Bruna Grimaldi, Piedmont, Italy

Description

This vineyard is the only authorised MGA in the Roddi commune. The cantina has three parcels, with some vines planted from the top to the bottom of the slope, while others horizontally follow the contours of the hillside.  Simone prefers the results from the latter, which are used in this wine, along with the oldest vines. It is deliciously perfumed, and Simone’s instincts and skills are well to the fore to create something so balanced, yet engaging. There are lovely points of detail on a palate that has a sweet core of fruit, mixed with blood orange and some pithy tannins.

Critics reviews

Kerin O'Keefe 93/100
The graceful 2020 Bricco Ambrogio from Bruna Grimaldi is smooth and fragrant, with alluring scents of red berry, spice, rose and violet. Full-bodied and elegant, the savory, already immensely enjoyable palate delivers juicy red cherry, strawberry compote and cake spice accompanied by polished tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it well balanced while a licorice note lingers on the close.Drink through 2032Kerin O'Keefe, KerinOKeefe.com (January 2024)

About this wine

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is the grape behind the Barolo and Barbaresco wines and is hardly ever seen outside the confines of Piedmont. It takes its name from "nebbia" which is Italian for fog, a frequent phenomenon in the region.

Cantina Bruna Grimaldi

In the 1950s, Giacomo Grimaldi set his family on a quality winemaking path. This saw him move away from bulk production, introduce pioneering viticultural practices, nurture vineyard wellbeing and introduce vintage bottlings. In 1990, the winery passed into the hands of his daughter Bruna, after whom the cantina was consequently renamed.
