2019 Barolo, Margheria, Massolino, Piedmont, Italy

Description

This plot is situated towards the lower slopes below the winery, as it looks west to Monforte d’Alba. There are 1.5 hectares here, with full south and south-west exposure. Franco considers the Barolo Margheria the most elegant of Massolino’s single vineyard wines, and the most expressive when young. The bouquet is delicate, with rose and notes of violet, and the tannins have a chalkier texture from the sandier soil. Always evident is a subtle nose of orange peel. There is a beguiling transparency to the wine.

Critics reviews

Antonio Galloni 96/100
The 2019 Barolo Margheria is a classic Serralunga Barolo. Deep, savory and wonderfully complex, the Margheria offers up a compelling mix of red/purplish fruit, sage, menthol, licorice, dried flowers, graphite and melted road tar. Muscular tannins wrap it all together. The 2019 is seriously impressive.Drink 2027–2044antonio_galloni, Vinous.com.com (November 2022)

A shade deeper than their classic Barolo of the same vintage. Serious and notably deep, peppery nose with savoury, minerally notes but still a little closed on the fruit. With aeration it’s more aromatic and fruit-driven, with raspberry notes. Cool climate in character. Juicy and energetic on the palate with firm muscular structure that demands more time.Drink 2027–2042Walter Speller, JancisRobinson.com (November 2022)

About this wine

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is the grape behind the Barolo and Barbaresco wines and is hardly ever seen outside the confines of Piedmont. It takes its name from "nebbia" which is Italian for fog, a frequent phenomenon in the region.

Massolino

Based in the heart of the village of Serralunga, Massolino is a historical estate now managed by Franco Massolino. The estate was established in 1896 by Franco’s great-grandfather, and its running has been deeply interwoven throughout different generations. Charming and open yet reflective, Franco combines a willingness to challenge assumptions with a deeply-felt sense of responsibility to his family legacy. This legacy, in his view, is to faithfully represent the wines and unique heritage of the region. To give the purest expression of the grape, vinification is traditional, with fermentation and maceration for around 21 days in temperature-controlled, open oak fermenters called tini. The wine is the aged in large Slovenian oak botti – no oak toast, just steamed – for up to 30 months before being left to mature in bottle.
