Description
The plot of 1.3 hectares has the oldest vines of the Massolino estate, which were planted in 1958. It faces south to south-west on the western side of the Serralunga ridge. The soils here are classic Serralunga: very white, chalky, and compact. The old vine density really comes through on the palate of the Barolo Parafada, intensifying the balsamic and slightly medicinal note of the wine’s core. This wine, however, is really about control. Its power and structure are innate: brooding, but never off the leash.

Antonio Galloni 96/100
The 2019 Barolo Parafada is a wine of tremendous inner strength, as if all of its energy is focused inwards. Dark cherry, smoke, leather, gravel, scorched earth and licorice slowly come alive in the glass. Dense, potent and muscular, the 2019 offers tons of textural intensity and brooding, virile power. It is fascinating to taste next to the Margheria, which is a bit more aromatic and nuanced, while the Parafada is all muscle. This is one of the best editions I can remember tasting.Drink 2027-2044antonio_galloni, Vinous.com.com (November 2022)

Just mid ruby. At first there is a clear impact of the posh oak on the nose, but with aeration it lifts off and becomes just a pinch. Meaty raspberry nose that is still compact and youthful but with plenty of depth. Bags of fine, coating tannins rolling over the fresh, deep red fruit. Sensational balance between fruit and tannins.Drink 2028-2044Walter Speller, JancisRobinson.com (November 2022)

About this wine
Nebbiolo
Nebbiolo is the grape behind the Barolo and Barbaresco wines and is hardly ever seen outside the confines of Piedmont. It takes its name from "nebbia" which is Italian for fog, a frequent phenomenon in the region.

Massolino
Based in the heart of the village of Serralunga, Massolino is a historical estate now managed by Franco Massolino. The estate was established in 1896 by Franco’s great-grandfather, and its running has been deeply interwoven throughout different generations. Charming and open yet reflective, Franco combines a willingness to challenge assumptions with a deeply-felt sense of responsibility to his family legacy. This legacy, in his view, is to faithfully represent the wines and unique heritage of the region. To give the purest expression of the grape, vinification is traditional, with fermentation and maceration for around 21 days in temperature-controlled, open oak fermenters called tini. The wine is the aged in large Slovenian oak botti – no oak toast, just steamed – for up to 30 months before being left to mature in bottle.
