Description
With the 2018 vintage, the family decided to include all their crus in this blend, but things are back to business as usual for the 2019 Barolo Classico. That’s not to say that this wine is any less engaging than its predecessor. The vast majority of the fruit stems from Serralunga (Briccolina, Collaretto, Broglio and Le Turne), but the presence of some fruit from Parussi (Castiglione Falletto) precludes this wines from being offered as Commune di Serralunga. However, it retains its Serralunga spirit; there is lots of pure red fruit, and the palate boasts Franco’s china-smooth tannins.

Antonio Galloni 92/100
The 2019 Barolo is a very serious wine. Readers looking for an easygoing, entry-level Barolo will not find that here. Bright and sizzling with tannin, the 2019 is going to need at least a few years to fully come together. Crushed rocks, red/purplish fruit and dried flowers emerge with some coaxing, but this is really a wine for the cellar. It is also probably the most reticent straight Barolo I tasted for this report.Drink 2026 - 2037antonio_galloni, Vinous.com.com (November 2022)

Walter Speller 17++/20
Palish ruby. A subtle, lifted, cherry and cranberry nose dabbed with spicy oak notes and a hint of orange skin. Sappy, lively cherry fruit on the palate with a long, tannic grip on the finish. Fresh, long and elegant. Can be approached now.Drink 2023 - 2034Walter Speller, JancisRobinson.com (November 2022)

Aldo Fiordelli 90/100
Massolino classically ages all their Barolos in large Slavonian oak vessels. Fully focused on rose and violet, with fresh watermelon and a citrussy note enhanced by cinnamon and rhubarb, this Barolo is deliciously complex and classic for Serralunga, with crisp acidity and firm tannins wrapped up in flowery notes, leading to a dusty finish.Drink 2023 - 2045Aldo Fiordelli, Decanter.com (February 2023)

About this wine
Nebbiolo
Nebbiolo is the grape behind the Barolo and Barbaresco wines and is hardly ever seen outside the confines of Piedmont. It takes its name from "nebbia" which is Italian for fog, a frequent phenomenon in the region.

Massolino
Based in the heart of the village of Serralunga, Massolino is a historical estate now managed by Franco Massolino. The estate was established in 1896 by Franco’s great-grandfather, and its running has been deeply interwoven throughout different generations. Charming and open yet reflective, Franco combines a willingness to challenge assumptions with a deeply-felt sense of responsibility to his family legacy. This legacy, in his view, is to faithfully represent the wines and unique heritage of the region. To give the purest expression of the grape, vinification is traditional, with fermentation and maceration for around 21 days in temperature-controlled, open oak fermenters called tini. The wine is the aged in large Slovenian oak botti – no oak toast, just steamed – for up to 30 months before being left to mature in bottle.
