2019 Barolo, Parussi, Massolino, Piedmont, Italy

Description

Massolino bought 1.8 hectares of this Castiglione Falletto vineyard in 2006, making it their only land in Barolo located outside Serralunga. Here, the soil is richer and the vines more energetic than on the cool, white soils of the rest of the estate. There is less limestone but more clay and magnesium, but none of the iron oxides of Serralunga. The 2019 Barolo Parussi is broad-shouldered and complex, with a brooding density appropriate to Castiglione, and a more savoury aspect. Franco feels this will need some time to truly find its balance.

Critics reviews

Antonio Galloni 97/100
The 2019 Barolo Parussi is Massolino's sole Barolo from Castiglione Falletto. A wine of total grace and refinement, the 2019 is pure seduction. Freshly cut flowers, mint, sweet red berry fruit, orange peel and rose petal soar out of the glass. Readers will find an elegant, sublime Barolo that hits all the right notes. Don't miss it.Drink 2027-2044antonio_galloni, Vinous.com.com (November 2022)

Just ruby. Great depth of fruit on the nose and with saline, minerally touches. Not entirely open, but captivating, fragrant and lifted and with quite a bit of substance. Juicy acidity and still-shy fruit. Minerally and with fine, super-long tannin while the fresh acidity accentuates the ripe raspberry fruit. Gorgeous length and succulence. Fine but potent. About this wine

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is the grape behind the Barolo and Barbaresco wines and is hardly ever seen outside the confines of Piedmont. It takes its name from "nebbia" which is Italian for fog, a frequent phenomenon in the region.

Massolino

Based in the heart of the village of Serralunga, Massolino is a historical estate now managed by Franco Massolino. The estate was established in 1896 by Franco’s great-grandfather, and its running has been deeply interwoven throughout different generations. Charming and open yet reflective, Franco combines a willingness to challenge assumptions with a deeply-felt sense of responsibility to his family legacy. This legacy, in his view, is to faithfully represent the wines and unique heritage of the region. To give the purest expression of the grape, vinification is traditional, with fermentation and maceration for around 21 days in temperature-controlled, open oak fermenters called tini. The wine is the aged in large Slovenian oak botti – no oak toast, just steamed – for up to 30 months before being left to mature in bottle.
