2018 Mas de Daumas Gassac, Rouge, St Guilhem-le-Désert Cité d'Aniane, Languedoc

Description

Now in its 41st vintage, Mas de Daumas Gassac's red continues to be blended from up to 20 black varieties in the typical Medoc fashion with long fermentations and 12-15 months of élevage in oak to produce a wine which transcends conventional categorisation.

Approachable in its first three years for an unabashed celebration of ripe black fruit and garrigue spice, it also has an unparalleled capacity to age, still giving pleasure well into its second decade.

A very enticing nose, ripe and lusciously rich with notes of blackcurrant pastel infused with savoury herbal warmth. This is a generous Mas de Daumas, oozing with liqueur-like dark fruits that are gorgeously weighted with beautifully textured savoury tannins.

Dry warming herbs, lavender, arabica coffee and dark chocolate all play out across the palate, and then a spicy, dry finish completes this broad and hugely appealing wine.

Mas de Daumas Gassac

Famously described as the ‘First Growth of the Languedoc’, Mas De Daumas Gassac remains unique in the region.  The world-famous red is an intriguing blend of Cabernet Sauvignon along with a mix of indigenous and more unusual varieties from the south of France, such as Grenache, Cinsualt and Tempranillo. Mas De Daumas Gassac Blanc is a similarly fascinating blend of grape varieties, with Chardonnay and Viognier taking centre stage. Lauded across the wine world, not for nothing is this Domaine named the Lafite of the Languedoc.
