2018 Cloudy Bay, Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, New Zealand

Description

With a 30% decrease in production, a selective harvest has delivered optimum fruit intensity and concentration for this ever-popular wine. Full of verve and pizazz, the nose displays notes of gooseberry, fresh lemons and white blossom, marked by a wonderful freshness. Fantastic tension across the palate which is tightly wound at present, lemons and limes dance across the tongue, backed by a juicy green fruit character. Finely poised and precise through to a long and mouth-watering finish, this deserves at least 6 months before starting to reveal its more tropical character. We tasted this earlier today alongside the winemaker from Cloudy Bay, he makes a comparison to the 2006 vintage which is magnificent and still alive, I’d love to try this 2018 release in 10 years’ time! A brilliant testament to the quality being delivered from this renowned Marlborough estate.

About this wine

Sauvignon Blanc

An important white grape in Bordeaux and the Loire Valley that has now found fame in New Zealand and now Chile. It thrives on the gravelly soils of Bordeaux and is blended with Sémillon to produce fresh, dry, crisp  Bordeaux Blancs, as well as more prestigious Cru Classé White Graves. It is also blended with Sémillon, though in lower proportions, to produce the great sweet wines of Sauternes. It performs well in the Loire Valley and particularly on the well-drained chalky soils found in Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé, where it produces bone dry, highly aromatic, racy wines, with grassy and sometimes smoky, gunflint-like nuances.
