Description
This comes from clay and galestro soils. Natural fermentation in steel is followed by 36 months in 20- to 40-litre Austrian oak botti. The nose is heady with wildflower highlights. The texture is velvety, with incredible depth, oozing dark cherry, tight-grain oak spice and mineral tang. The lavish-but-firm tannins are a reminder of the potential to come.

James Suckling 92/100
Sweet berries and black cherries with some flowers and dark earth, too. It’s full-bodied with velvety, chewy tannins that leave a slightly dry impression. But it should come around nicely with three or four years of bottle age. Try after 2024.james_suckling, jamessuckling_com (Nov 2021)

La Serena, Tuscany
Local lad Andrea Mantengoli has been farming Cantina La Serena since 1988. The farm is next door to Cerbaiona and Biondi Santi, on the eastern shoulder of Montalcino. The vines here are grown at 200-400 metres’ altitude. This covers a range of different soil strata: atypically white and yellow tufo; sand; schist; and galestro. Each gives depth and detail to the wine. Andrea and his twin brother, Marcello, manage the estate. They are proudly organic, and they use some biodynamic methods. In addition to grapes and vines, the ecosystem here includes spelt, grain, olives and honeybees.
