2016 Quinta do Noval, Port, Portugal

Description

The 2016 Noval is very impressive. The nose is intense with brooding dark berry fruit and an earthy touch. The palate is focused and linear with a citrus lick to the acidity, heading into rather fascinating hints of fresh blood orange. The most astonishing things about this Vintage Port though is just how exceptionally smooth, rounded and fine it is, given the richness of the fruit. The high level of tannins feel almost ‘coated’ as they glide seamlessly across the palate. All is in balance here and the finish draws ever onward culminating in a slightly herbal lift. This was one of my favourite Ports of 2016. Drink 2030-2050+.

About this wine

Touriga Nacional

Touriga Nacional is a highly regarded grape variety indigenous to Portugal, often considered the country's flagship red grape. Known for its intense aromas and flavours, the wines typically feature dark fruits such as blackberries, blueberries, and plums, along with distinctive floral notes like violets and hints of spices, herbs, and chocolate. These generally have high tannin levels, good acidity, and deep, dark colour, contributing to their structure and ageing potential.

Porto

Porto

Rich, saccharine, intensely-flavoured and, at their best, wonderfully majestic and harmonious, these are wines to be savoured on their own, or with a fine chunk of cheese after a meal. Port comes from the stunning Douro region of Portugal, about 50 miles east of Oporto, and is made in two different styles: bottle-aged and cask-aged.
