2015 Champagne Gosset, Grand Millésime, Brut

Description

Gosset again proves its position on Champagne producers' top table with this magnificent 2015 Millesime. Not the most effortless vintage to manage, yet the results here are immediately enjoyable and capable of further cellaring. 59% Pinot Noir, 41% Chardonnay from Grand and Premier Cru vineyards, giving five years maturing on lees. This gives a nose of golden fruit crumble, jasmine flowers and candied lemon. The palate is firmly foamy, capturing roasted peach, fig tarts and white pear flavours. The finish is long, supported by cox apple tang and chalky mineral freshness.

About this wine

Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir is probably the most frustrating, and at times infuriating, wine grape in the world. However when it is successful, it can produce some of the most sublime wines known to man. This thin-skinned grape which grows in small, tight bunches performs well on well-drained, deepish limestone based subsoils as are found on Burgundy's Côte d'Or. Pinot Noir is more susceptible than other varieties to over cropping - concentration and varietal character disappear rapidly if yields are excessive and yields as little as 25hl/ha are the norm for some climats of the Côte d`Or.

Champagne

In 1668, Dom Pérignon is said to have discovered how to make sparkling wine; today his technique is used the world over, although Champagne continues to make some of the finest. France’s most northerly wine region, Champagne is now home to 15,000 growers and 290 ‘houses’. A blend of grape varieties is usually required: white Chardonnay to add fruit and elegance, and two reds – Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier – to provide body and backbone.
