Description
Before 2008, Mario’s Barolo was only from Castiglione Falletto; but, with the arrival of Luisa’s inheritance in La Morra, Mario was able to produce two Baroli, one of which is Castiglione designated. The first vintage of this wine was 2013, but in 2014 everything had to be used in the classic Barolo, so this is only the second iteration. This is Mario’s homage to his family, his history and his origins in Castiglione Falletto. Richer and more assertive than the blended Barolo, this is a sublime expression of both the man and the place. Savoury, balsamic, cherry fruit mingles with notes of wild herbs and tobacco. There is immense power in this wine, but also grace, with extremely stylish tannins. This will be shipped late, currently scheduled for the first quarter of 2020. Drink 2024-2040.

About this wine
Nebbiolo
Nebbiolo is the grape behind the Barolo and Barbaresco wines and is hardly ever seen outside the confines of Piedmont. It takes its name from "nebbia" which is Italian for fog, a frequent phenomenon in the region.

Cascina Fontana
Sixth-generation Mario Fontana is among Barolo’s best-loved producers. His wines are undeniably Burgundian in style; his combination of artisanal purity and finesse is as evident in his Dolcetto as his Barolo. Mario follows organic methods but doesn’t seek certification; his philosophy is individual, guided by genuine skills learnt from his father, and his father before him. While many can be blindsided by stoic traditions, Mario is free-minded. His wines are timeless examples of great Barolo, positively charged and yet cutting edge.
