2014 Château Pontet-Canet, Pauillac, Bordeaux

Description

Lovely deep colour to this, clearly from ripe grapes rather than any extraction process as well. The nose is reticent to start but once it emerges it seriously impresses, rich balsam and dark cherry laden. The palate is very pure and fine, again that lovely rich cherry fruit is here and it is followed by a beautiful clean acidity, it develops further in the mouth and has excellent length. The has real breeding and class, very fine tannins, but serious structure that indicates its long term potential is there behind it all. A contender for the most harmonious wine of the week and we suspect it will age amazingly well.

On the nose this wine is wonderfully expansive, open knit and all-encompassing. There are waves of wild strawberry and dense raspberry characters which have an intoxicating, almost heady and exotic feel. This level of density and complexity is rare in 2014, reserved for only the most serious and aristocratic of Left Bank wines. The palate is equally compelling, combining the astonishing purity and sweetness of fruit which the property has become so well known for, along with a trace of savoury, aged beef, almost tapenade character. Alongside this there is great balancing acidity which combines with ultra-fine tannins to give this wine lift and further precision. This is another top drawer vintage from Pontet-Canet, which shows incredible finesse given the scale and volume of the wine. It does beg the question though, just how can Alfred & Melanie Tesseron’s wine keep improving? They certainly seem to be doing it in 2014.

A robust, intense nose. Rich and toasty flavours. Lots of tannin, but very ripe tannin. Quite raw and rude in some ways. Then a great weight of fruit on the finish. Just a little dryness on the end. But distinctive overall. Energetic. Very confident and robust. Not fine and refined but admirably confident. jancis_robinson_mw MW - JancisRobinson.com - Mar 2015

Classic Cabernet nose of cassis. Lovely purity and depth with a silky texture that caresses the palate – more obviously Pontet-Canet than Pauillac. An extremely fine wine almost in a class of its own.

The 2014 Pontet-Canet, now in bottle, was tasted twice during my trip to Bordeaux. It has an attractive bouquet: graphite tinged black fruit, incense and violets, perhaps a little more hedonistic than I envisaged when I tasted it from barrel. The palate is medium-bodied with tensile tannin thanks to the keen line of acidity. I like the precision of this Pontet-Canet. It feels linear and correct, pencil lead notes developing towards the second half, more quintessentially Pauillac than previous vintages, with what you might describe as a classic Pauillac finish that retains the focus that I remarked upon from barrel. Chateau Pontet-Canet

Château Pontet-Canet is a large Pauillac estate that can trace its origins back to 1725, when Jean-François Pontet gave his name to the estate he had acquired. The wine was not château-bottled until 1972 and in 1975 the property was sold to Guy Tesseron, of the Tesseron family, one of the finest exponents of luxury, very old, aged Cognacs (Cognac Tesseron). The Tesserons also own Château Lafon-Rochet in St-Estephe. Today, Château Pontet-Canet is owned and run by Alfred and Michel Tesseron.
