Description
Waxed apple skins, lemon pith and gentle florality combine with a wet stone note to give an enticingly fresh punch to the wine. I love the vitality this offers and the palate adds a full, textured, broad and buttery style where the fruit and oak are balanced by a very focused grapefruit like acidity. This is a big wine with a big crunchy finish that keeps the taste buds tingling long after the wine has gone. Excellent weight and lift have resulted in a standout Ygrec, so Yquem have two great wines to boast about this year. On this evidence 2013 is a must buy vintage for those who like their dry white Bordeaux.

The 2013 Ygrec has a vibrant and complex nose with aromas of nectarine, lemongrass and chamomile. Despite its youth, there is a wealth of fleshy fruit, tropical pineapple and white flower flavours, enhanced by a refreshing acidity with adds a purity to the palate. Perfectly balanced. The subtle smoky musk further enhances the layers and depth of flavour which gently leaves you with a lingering imprint of vivid Sauvignon on your tongue. Although super now, I suspect this will evolve and improve with a further 10 years aging.

About this wine
Sauvignon Blanc
An important white grape in Bordeaux and the Loire Valley that has now found fame in New Zealand and now Chile. It thrives on the gravelly soils of Bordeaux and is blended with Sémillon to produce fresh, dry, crisp Bordeaux Blancs, as well as more prestigious Cru Classé White Graves. It is also blended with Sémillon, though in lower proportions, to produce the great sweet wines of Sauternes. It performs well in the Loire Valley and particularly on the well-drained chalky soils found in Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé, where it produces bone dry, highly aromatic, racy wines, with grassy and sometimes smoky, gunflint-like nuances.

Château d’Yquem
Château d’Yquem is the leading estate in the Sauternes appellation on the Left Bank of Bordeaux. It has long been reputed for making one of the world’s great sweet wines. In the 1855 classification of Bordeaux wines, Yquem was given the lofty title of Premier Cru Supérieur – the sole property at that level. It sits comfortably among the First Growths of the Médoc and their equivalents on the Right Bank regarding its quality and prestige among wine collectors.
