2015 Mirum, Verdicchio di Matelica, Riserva, La Monacesca, Marche, Italy

Description

100% Verdicchio

A delightful deep-gold colour with hints of green, this lovely, mature vintage of Mirum is in its pomp. Rich notes of honey, flowers and fully ripe melon all vie for attention on the bouquet. The palate is broad and mouth-filling with salty notes, citrus and ripe stone fruits and Chablis-esque minerality, kept in balance by perfectly judged acidity. Long and fine on the satisfying finish.

Critics reviews

Tamlyn Currin 17+/20
Pale lemon-green. Tight, chalky-dusty tones over the dried herb and lemon rind. Very young and youthful, and much more in keeping with my experience of Matelica in general and this estate in particular. Chalky, chewy texture with plenty of extracts. A tight, mineral core that needs time to unfurl. Citrus-peel intensity. Long.Drink 2021 - 2028Tamlyn Currin, JancisRobinson.com (May 2019)

Attractive and subtle pastry-like complexity here. This has an extra dimension, showing better concentration than most in this space. An attractive cool, and fresh palate. Drink nowjames_suckling, jamessuckling_com (June 2018)

About this wine

Verdicchio

Verdicchio is one of the most widely planted white grape varieties in the Marche region of central Italy. It has been cultivated for over 600 years and is the grape behind two of the Marche's most important DOCs – Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi, to the west of Ancona and 20 miles from the Adriatic Sea, and Verdicchio di Matelica, further inland and at a higher altitude, close to the Umbria border. Verdicchio's name is derived from verde, meaning green, referring to the yellowish-green skin of the grape, which gives the wine a subtle, greenish hue. It produces crisp, dry, mineral wines of naturally high acidity, often with hints of citrus fruits and almonds. It is also well suited to the production of sparkling wine and Verdicchio was one of the first Italian spumantes back in the 19th century. Verdicchio has recently been proven to be identical to Trebbiano di Soave, Trebbiano di Lugana (aka Turbiana) and Trebbiano Veltenesi.
