2012 Château Berliquet, St Emilion, Bordeaux

Description

This was one of the first wines that made the whole team stop scribbling in their tasting books, look up and say ”Heavens”! Made by the energetic Nicolas Thienpont of Ch. Pavie Maquin, Ch. Larcis Ducasse and Ch. Beauséjour Duffau Lagarrosse, Ch. Berliquet was founded in 1768 and is one of the oldest estates in St Emilion. In recent years it has performed extremely well and 2012 is no exception. It has a great balance of ripe raspberry fruit and soft-grained tannins. It is simply delicious and will be a joy to drink in a few years. Drink 2015-2023.

About this wine

Château Berliquet

Ch. Berliquet comprises a square, 10-hectare handkerchief of St Emilion vineyard, surrounded on three sides by Ch. Canon’s vines. Its long history dates back to the 1740s, making it one of the appellation’s oldest vineyards. It is a Grand Cru Classé.

Saint-Emilion

First officially classified in 1954, St-Émilion is one of Bordeaux's largest winemaking appellations, producing more wine than Listrac, Moulis, St Estèphe, Pauillac, St Julien and Margaux combined. Many of the region's finest vineyards can be found atop the steep limestone slopes of the village itself, although a fledgling band of garagiste producers are eschewing terroir to make small-batch, deeply-concentrated wines from their homes.
