2010 Barolo, Le Vigne, Luciano Sandrone, Piedmont, Italy

Description

This is a Barolo made from a blend of top sites across the region, in this sense it represents a more traditional approach to Barolo than the single vineyard Cannubi Boschis. The winemaking is still modern though with low yields, lovely ripe grapes and some new oak used to add some structure to the wine.

In 2010 this approach has produced a wine with a lush blackcurrant nose, with some touches of redcurrant and liquorice. The palate has wonderful layers of flavour and structure with the overall experience being one of fine tannin and excellent freshness. This doesn’t meant that it is not mouth filling though, with the cherry and plum fruit coating the mouth coupled with menthol and hints of black tea starting to show on the finish.

Critics reviews

Monica Larner 96/100
The 2010 Barolo Le Vigne is composed from an assembly of fruit sourced from the townships of Barolo, Novello and Serralunga dAlba. It reflects Barolo tradition in which, years ago, this noble wine was made from a wide assembly of fruit instead of single cru sites (as is the custom today). Bright cherry fruit, blackberry and creme de cassis segue to profound layers of licorice, spice, cola and anisette. It feels strong and tonic in the mouth with a pleasingly velveteen texture and a fresh dose of zesty acidity. Drink: 2017-2030.Monica Larner - 26/06/2014

About this wine

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is the grape behind the Barolo and Barbaresco wines and is hardly ever seen outside the confines of Piedmont. It takes its name from "nebbia" which is Italian for fog, a frequent phenomenon in the region.

Luciano Sandrone

Today, Sandrone is one of Barolo’s most admired names, but this producer came from humble beginnings. The son of the local carpenter, Luciano Sandrone always dreamed of owning his own vineyard and making his own wine. He achieved his lifelong ambition in 1978, buying a small plot in Cannubi Boschis. This now-legendary vineyard proved pivotal in securing his family’s fortunes; Luciano’s wines were among the first in the region to garner worldwide acclaim. Driven by Luciano’s clarity of vision, the estate has since expanded to over 20 hectares. His original vineyard, now in front of the family’s home and winery, produces the fruit that goes into their Aleste Barolo. Since the early ’90s, Luciano has worked alongside his children Luca and Barbara, and increasingly his grandchildren Alessia and Stefano.
