2010 Mazis-Chambertin, Grand Cru, Olivier Bernstein, Burgundy

Description

Another fine dense purple colour. Dense, structured, noble, backward. A wealth of red and black fruit, with a significant tannic structure behind. Everything is together and it impresses on all levels. At the moment it is more reserved than the Clos de la Roche or Bonnes Mares, but it has the potential to develop into an extraordinary wine.

Critics reviews

Antonio Galloni 94-96/100
The 2010 Mazis-Chambertin is totally sublime. It boasts a striking inner perfume of floral dark fruit, mint, sweet herbs and honey. Silky tannins frame the dark fruit through to the enveloping, refined finish. This isnt the biggest or richest of these 2010s, but it may very well be the most elegant. Hints of white flowers add the last layers of complexity. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2030.antonio_galloni - 29/02/2012

Very fine and perfumed. Fine boned and very refreshing and exciting indeed. Tannins a little marked on the very end but altogether something very interesting. Racy. Drink 2018-2025. jancis_robinson_mw MW - JancisRobinson.com - March 2012)

A brooding and introverted nose allows itself to be evaluated only after aggressive swirling grudgingly liberates glimpses of earthy and gamy ripe wild red berry fruit aromas. There is outstanding intensity, richness and volume to the mouth coating broad-shouldered flavors that exude a fine minerality on the explosive and massively long finish. This very firmly structured effort is a definite 'wow' wine that should amply reward long-term cellaring. Drink 2025+. Don’t miss. (allen_meadows - burghound_com.com - March 2012)

About this wine

Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir is probably the most frustrating, and at times infuriating, wine grape in the world. However when it is successful, it can produce some of the most sublime wines known to man. This thin-skinned grape which grows in small, tight bunches performs well on well-drained, deepish limestone based subsoils as are found on Burgundy's Côte d'Or. Pinot Noir is more susceptible than other varieties to over cropping - concentration and varietal character disappear rapidly if yields are excessive and yields as little as 25hl/ha are the norm for some climats of the Côte d`Or.

Olivier Bernstein

Much has changed in Burgundy, both economically and climatologically, since Olivier Bernstein began his eponymous project with the 2007 vintage. Yet the aim here remains essentially the same: to produce wines of the highest possible quality and to forego nothing in a quest to create elegant, sensual and refined wines that can sit comfortably among the top wines of Burgundy. It is this quest for perfection that has seen Olivier cease production of two of his Premiers Crus in order to focus on his domaine holding in Champeaux, and the seven Grands Crus which are now well established in the range: Charmes-Chambertin; Mazis-Chambertin; Chambertin Clos de Bèze; Chambertin; Clos de la Roche; Bonnes Mares; and Clos de Vougeot.
