2009 Nuits-St Georges, Les Vaucrains, 1er Cru, Camille Giroud, Burgundy

Description

Vaucrains is situated in the heart of the appellation just south of the town of Nuits itself. It sits above Les St Georges and Les Cailles and intensity and minerality are its hallmarks. The young genius that is David Croix has fashioned this brilliant wine for Camille Giroud.

Giroud's Nuits-St Georges has a notably tough, dense structure, which is the terroir of Vaucrains speaking. Sensitive handling means that it has avoided any feeling of roughness – a really grown-up version of the Maranges, perhaps?

Antonio Galloni 91-94/100
The 2009 Nuits St. Georges Les Vaucrains shows off dazzling inner perfume in its explosive dark red berries and flowers. Supple, sexy and remarkably approachable, the 2009 Vaucrains is totally finessed from start to finish. It is a hugely impressive wine, even at this early stage. Tasted from tank. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2034.antonio_galloni - 02/05/2011

Croix generally seems to do very well with this wine and 2009 is no exception because despite the reduction that presently compromises the nose, the depth of material on the extremely rich, full-bodied and powerful flavors is simply outstanding. The phenolically ripe tannins are quite firm and while the appellation naturally produces robust wines, this is a big wine even by those standards. Patience required but it should be more than worth the wait. 91-94 points. Sweet spot outstanding. (allen_meadows, burghound_com.com)

About this wine

Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir is probably the most frustrating, and at times infuriating, wine grape in the world. However when it is successful, it can produce some of the most sublime wines known to man. This thin-skinned grape which grows in small, tight bunches performs well on well-drained, deepish limestone based subsoils as are found on Burgundy's Côte d'Or. Pinot Noir is more susceptible than other varieties to over cropping - concentration and varietal character disappear rapidly if yields are excessive and yields as little as 25hl/ha are the norm for some climats of the Côte d`Or.
