Description
Situated next door to Petrus and Cheval Blanc this gave me more instant pleasure than both this year. Glorious, sexy, seductive; these were the words that sprang to mind when tasting 2008 Ch. la Conseillante. One of our 2008 favourite wines on the Right Bank, this just exudes Burgundian class, all held together with a rich Bordeaux core. With an opulent, beautifully perfumed nose of almost Ribena-like concentration, this has layers and layers of fruit and a powerful, chocolate finish carried by an excellent ball of fruit all wrapped up with grainy tannins that lasts across the palate and beyond.

About this wine
Merlot
The most widely planted grape in Bordeaux and a grape that has been on a relentless expansion drive throughout the world in the last decade. Merlot is adaptable to most soils and is relatively simple to cultivate. It is a vigorous naturally high yielding grape that requires savage pruning - over-cropped Merlot-based wines are dilute and bland. It is also vital to pick at optimum ripeness as Merlot can quickly lose its varietal characteristics if harvested overripe.

Pomerol
With 150 or so producers and roughly 740 hectares of vineyards, the smallest of Bordeaux's major appellations is home to myriad bijou domaines – many making little more than 1,000 cases per annum. If the topography and architecture of Pomerol are typical, the style of its wines is anything but. The best vineyards are planted on a seam of rich clay extending across the raised plateau of Pomerol from the boundary of St Emilion.
