Description
Haut-Bages Libéral's undeniably fine terroir (next to First Growth Ch. Latour, no less) has been harnessed superbly in 2006. Claire Villars delivers what most Claret lovers really want - namely, wines of character that reflect their terroir, offered at sensible prices. Made from 25% Merlot and 75% Cabernet, this has a lovely fresh, elegant nose; the palate is feminine in style with a lovely creamy finesse but also has rich, spicy damson and blackberry fruit and very good grip. The finish is very pure with an attractive marzipan edge providing an extra layer of complexity.

Neal Martin MW 89/100
The 2006 Haut Bages Liberal has a gentle, but respectable bouquet with better fruit intensity than the 2006 Grand Puy Ducasse. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, pleasing weight in the mouth, a keen line of acidity with an attractive, saline finish that begs another sip. Probably not the most glamorous wine of the vintage, but this is a very good effort. Tasted April 2016.Neil Martin - 30/05/2016
About this wine
Château Haut-Bages Libéral
Château Haut-Bages Libéral is a Fifth Growth in Pauillac owned and run by Claire Villars-Lurton and her husband Gonzague Lurton. It is one of the couple’s three Classified Growths in the Médoc with biodynamic certification, along with Château Durfort-Vivens and Château Ferrière. The 30-hectare property sits next door to Château Latour; the two are the only Pauillac estates with parcels of limestone soils, thought to lend elegance and finesse in a commune often known for power. The vineyard is planted to a majority of Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot.
