Description
Our favourite Pontet-Canet and even a challenge to Ch. Mouton-Rothschild's First Growth crown. Intense, multi-layered and masculine with a wonderful balance of acidity, ripe tannin and cool, rich fruits. A star wine of the vintage and a star buy.

Neal Martin MW 92/100
Tasted at the Pontet-Canet vertical in London, it seems clear that the 2004 Chteau Pontet-Canet is predestined to always fall under the shadow of the 2005. Don't overlook this gem. The bouquet delivers pure blackberry, pencil lead and tobacco notes that are more generous than the 2005 at the momentopen for business, you might say. There is an element of dried herbs here, a hint of black tar. The palate is medium-bodied and quite sturdy in the mouth, the tannins perhaps abrasive when juxtaposed against the 2005, however they are couched in unexpectedly intense earthy black fruit that frame a tannic finish. If you hanker for a sumptuous Pontet-Canet, then opt for 2003 or 2009, but if your predilection is for a more classic Pauillac, then 2004 Pontet-Canet fits the bill. Undoubtedly a great wine from Alfred Tesseron for the vintage, I would start, broaching bottles now but keep a stash back for 4-5 years' time when those tannins have softened. Robert Parker 90+/100
Backward and powerful for the vintage, this blue/purple-colored 2004 exhibits classic creme de cassis, smoke, incense, and spring flower characteristics. Medium to full-bodied, dense, and excruciatingly tannic, this impressively endowed Pauillac is built for the long haul. However, patience will be required. robert_parker - Wine Advocate - Jun 07

Very ripe nose, blackberries, black cherries, sumptuous. Huge weight of opulent fruit, very ripe and fleshy, pungent minty and intense, very ripe tannins, hedonisitc and sensuous. Decanter, Wines of the Year- December 07

Chateau Pontet-Canet
Château Pontet-Canet is a large Pauillac estate that can trace its origins back to 1725, when Jean-François Pontet gave his name to the estate he had acquired. The wine was not château-bottled until 1972 and in 1975 the property was sold to Guy Tesseron, of the Tesseron family, one of the finest exponents of luxury, very old, aged Cognacs (Cognac Tesseron). The Tesserons also own Château Lafon-Rochet in St-Estephe. Today, Château Pontet-Canet is owned and run by Alfred and Michel Tesseron.
