2004 Brunello di Montalcino, Ugolaia, Lisini, Tuscany, Italy

Description

Almost opaque and still very youthful looking, the nose is still dense and underdeveloped, but gives hints of the greatness to come, with its brooding dark cherry fruit.

The only word to describe this Brunello  wine on the palate is massive; full bodied and spicy, packed with black and red cherry fruit, all tightly wound in a magnificent structure, fine tannins, mouth watering acidity and supporting alcohol, all in perfect balance. This is a monumental wine for the Cellar and will be magnificent in 2012-2014 and drink for a decade or two after that. A serious candidate for the best Ugolaia ever.

Critics reviews

Antonio Galloni 94/100
The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Ugolaia, from a small old-vine parcel on the estate, floats onto the palate with endless layers of perfumed fruit. Deceptively medium in body, the Ugolaia possesses remarkable depth. Sweet pine, menthol, red cherries and spices meld together seamlessly on the long finish. With time in the glass, the wine gains more volume as the fruit emerges and the bouquet becomes even more expansive. This is a gorgeous Brunello from Lisini. (antonio_galloni - Wine Advocate # 188 Apr 2010) Lisini is one of the historic properties in Montalcino. Family matriarch Elina Lisini served as President of the producers’ Consorzio in its early days back in the 1960s and remained a fixture of Montalcino until her passing last year.

Lisini, Tuscany

The history of Lisini dates to the time of the Medicis. This is one of Montalcino’s oldest estates, and a founding member of the Corsorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino. Lisini is one of the few producers in Sant’Angelo in Colle, in the south-west of Montalcino. The proximity here to Maremma gives maritime breezes warding against summer heat, which is especially important in as hot and dry a year as 2017. Thick woodland, olive groves and wild scrubs surround the 25 hectares under vine – a rural haven of the region’s finest terroir. An ancient river system sculpted the area, and with it the complex soils in Lisini’s vineyards. Fossil laced sand, clay and iron-rich soils, paired with altitudes of 300-400 metres, all play a leading role in the unique personality of Lisini’s wines.
