1991 Viña Tondonia Blanco, Gran Reserva, Bodegas R. López de Heredia, Rioja, Spain

Description

Every bit as good as the magisterial 1987, the 1991 boasts all the hallmarks of Tondonia; this is to say it is distinctive, youthful in apparent dotage and wonderfully fresh behind the mature leafy aromas.
The taster’s pen gets carried away ( probably because he finds it hard to spit the wine out during a professional tasting) and starts writing, in a somewhat inchoate fashion, a ‘sentence’ along the following lines; waxy, banana, decadent, lanolin, pear-skin, citron pressé, bitter sweet symphony, wonderful, is there any more…What more is there to say?

Bodegas R. López de Heredia is one of the wine world’s great treasures. Founded in 1877 by Don Rafael López de Heredia y Landeta, the bodega was built close to the railway station at Haro, in Rioja, its location geographically symbolic for proximity of access to the ideas of Bordeaux and practically useful for transportation of both grapes and wines. The quality of the wines is such that they have maintained a plateau of perfection for years.

About this wine

Viura

Viura is a synonym for Macabeo and is the most widely planted white grape variety in Rioja. It is a fairly straightforward grape to cultivate, although it is susceptible to disease and in particular to downy mildew and grey rot. It is a generous-yielding grape and in Rioja it tends to be blended with approximately 5% Malvasia to produce classic white Riojas. In Rioja Alvesa it is often blended with Tempranillo to produce high quality Red Riojas.
