Champagne Henri Giraud, Blanc de Craie, Brut

Description

This champagne really made me think. Unlike some bottles, I am hit by a complete mix of sweet and salty. Don’t worry, I’m not talking about Popcorn! There is a sherberty weight to this wine with flavours of?oyster shell, vanilla cream pastry, proving bread dough and hazelnuts. Quite unusual and very moreish. I am very impressed with this 100% Chardonnay bottling. Drink 2021-2029.

Critics reviews

Yohan Castaing 93/100
Blanc de Craie is a new cuvée from Henri Giraud, 100% Chardonnay from 55% Aÿ and 45% Louvois fruit. With scents of lemon, a little verbena and honeysuckle, the nose is lively and pleasant, while the texture is perfectly defined, displaying well-controlled acidity and perfect balance. Can be aged for up to five years. Yohan Castaing, Decanter

The NV Blanc de Craie, 100% Chardonnay from vineyards in Aÿ and Louvois, is bright and finely sculpted, with terrific aromatic intensity, tons of nuance and all the vibrancy from the chalk-rich soils that give this cuvée its name. Citrus peel, white flowers, white pepper, mint and anise lead into the vivid, persistent finish. The Blanc is done entirely in oak, but it is neutral, so there is virtually no oak imprint at all in the flavors, only in the textural feel. One of the unique aspects of the Blanc de Craie is that the base vintage (2017 in this case) accounts for only 30% of the blend. Dosage is 6 grams per liter. Disgorged: June 3, 2019. antonio_galloni, Vinous.com.com

Burgundy is Chardonnay's spiritual home and the best White Burgundies are dry, rich, honeyed wines with marvellous poise, elegance and balance. They are unquestionably the finest dry white wines in the world. Chardonnay plays a crucial role in the Champagne blend, providing structure and finesse, and is the sole grape in Blanc de Blancs.

Henri Giraud Champagne

Claude Giraud is the 12th generation of the Giraud-Hémart family to preside over the family business and produce Henri Giraud Champagne in Aÿ. The Henri Giraud Fût de Chêne is a blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, using the 'Petit Pinot' clone of Pinot Noir which has been grown solely in Aÿ since 1804. The wine is 100% oak fermented, a practice not commonly used elsewhere in Champagne, the notable exponents being Bollinger (for their vintage Champagnes), Alfred Gratien and Krug.
