Champagne Krug, Grande Cuvée, 171ème Édition, Brut

Description

In this cuvée, I expect nothing less than a complex and elegant Champagne that showcases the art of blending. The 171ème Édition excels here once again. The result is a harmonious and expressive wine that reveals layers of aromas and flavours and is well-rounded in its style. The nose is enticing with notes of jasmine blossom, ripe citrus, dried orchard fruits, and spicy aromatics. The palate is rich and creamy with a saline minerality that balances the ripe fruits and acidity. The finish is long and delicious, with toastiness and baked pecan patisserie. Food pairings here are limitless, and I encourage playful experimentation; there is enough depth and texture here to stand up to an array of dishes that span the world.

Krug has once again produced a mesmerising blend in their 171st edition. There is something truly magical to a wine that contains fruit from 12 different vintages - some fruit goes back to the 2000 vintage! The Pinot Noir dominant blend is palate enveloping with velvet structure and beguiling aromatics. The 42% reserve wines bring delightful buttered pastry and brioche notes, whilst fruit from the youngest vintage in the blend (2015) provides some bright citrus and orchard fruit. The finish is long and coated with a pleasant stony minerality.

About this wine

Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir is probably the most frustrating, and at times infuriating, wine grape in the world. However when it is successful, it can produce some of the most sublime wines known to man. This thin-skinned grape which grows in small, tight bunches performs well on well-drained, deepish limestone based subsoils as are found on Burgundy's Côte d'Or. Pinot Noir is more susceptible than other varieties to over cropping - concentration and varietal character disappear rapidly if yields are excessive and yields as little as 25hl/ha are the norm for some climats of the Côte d`Or.

Champagne

In 1668, Dom Pérignon is said to have discovered how to make sparkling wine; today his technique is used the world over, although Champagne continues to make some of the finest. France’s most northerly wine region, Champagne is now home to 15,000 growers and 290 ‘houses’. A blend of grape varieties is usually required: white Chardonnay to add fruit and elegance, and two reds – Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier – to provide body and backbone.

Krug

Krug was established in 1843 and has since specialised in producing only prestige and specialised champagnes. Krug is the only firm still producing all its champagne in small oak casks, an essential element for developing Krug's intense bouquet and complex flavours. Today, Henri, Rémi and Olivier Krug, who supervise every step of production, tasting and blending, represent the 5th and 6th generations. With long periods of maturation (6-8 years), Krug champagne continues to age gracefully after release, developing an intensely rich, nutty flavour whilst remaining remarkably fresh. Krug`s finest champagne is Clos du Mesnil, a 100%-Chardonnay based champagne that comes from a small walled vineyard at Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. It is one of the world`s greatest Blanc de Blanc champagnes.
