2020 Berry Bros. & Rudd Châteauneuf-du-Pape by Château la Nerthe, Rhône

Description

Châteauneuf-du-Pape is the most prestigious village in the Southern Rhône. It is world-renowned for its complex red blends, often based on (though certainly not limited to) Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Our 2020 Châteauneuf-du-Pape is made for us by Château la Nerthe, a historic estate dating back to at least 1560. La Nerthe’s 92 hectares of vineyards are broken down into 57 different plots, encompassing each of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s varied soil types, essentially making it a microcosm of the entire appellation.

Château la Nerthe has been farmed organically since 1988, and the vines are surrounded by woodlands. Biodiversity is actively encouraged. Since 1985, the estate has been owned by the Richard family; their investment and leadership have taken it to new heights. To reduce packaging waste, this wine is capsule-free.

Tasting note

This organic Châteauneuf-du-Pape has a bright, uplifting nose of ripe red cherry, creamy strawberry and white pepper. The fruit is pure and concentrated yet very fresh, finishing with a prickle of sweet spice. The wine combines the richness of a fine Châteauneuf-du-Pape with a mineral purity that comes from La Nerthe’s focus on the specificities of its terroir. Enjoy it with a lamb hot-pot or a ratatouille.

About this wine

Chateau la Nerthe

Château la Nerthe is a stunning, 500-year-old property becoming ‘one to watch’ in recent years. Working organically since 1998, its 57 parcels on various soils and expositions produce a seamless, complex Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The care taken in both vineyard and cellar has resulted in seriously impressive wines. This property is, absolutely, a worthy rival to the likes of Château de Beaucastel. Winemaker Rémi Jean is as inspiring as the terroir – his understanding of the multiple plots and attention to detail is impressive.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Châteauneuf-du-Pape

The largest and most important appellation in the southern Rhône, with more than 3,200 hectares of vineyards and over 80 growers, Châteauneuf-du-Pape produces more wine than the whole of the northern Rhône combined. The gloriously rich red wines, redolent of the heat and herbs of the south, are enhanced by the complexity which comes from blending several of the 14 permitted grape varieties including Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah.
