Very close to the border with Vosne, this east-facing plot is on fine gravel over pink Prémeaux marble. The 2019 is a little coy on the nose, with hints of black cherry and woodsmoke. It’s a cool, compact wine, with fine tannins and lovely purity of fruit.

Clear mid-purple. An elegant bouquet, much less depth than Thorey but additional style, showing its origins next to Vosne-Romanée. Clean clear and classy, no great wealth of fruit at the back but there is persistence. A fine-boned Damodes.Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy.com (December 2020)

The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Damodes 1er Cru includes one-quarter whole bunch this year. It has a well-defined bouquet of more black than red fruit, plus touches of white pepper and crushed limestone. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, cohesive and silky-smooth. Again, a little more grip would be nice, although it has plenty of charm. Drink after 3–4 years in bottle.Neil Martin, Vinous.com

About this wine

Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir is probably the most frustrating, and at times infuriating, wine grape in the world. However when it is successful, it can produce some of the most sublime wines known to man. This thin-skinned grape which grows in small, tight bunches performs well on well-drained, deepish limestone based subsoils as are found on Burgundy's Côte d'Or. Pinot Noir is more susceptible than other varieties to over cropping - concentration and varietal character disappear rapidly if yields are excessive and yields as little as 25hl/ha are the norm for some climats of the Côte d`Or.
