Description
In a commune which probably has the greatest variation in quality in 2014, Ch. Pavie Macquin is one of the most precise wines I tasted. Expertly tailored by Nicholas Thienpont, this shows sweet strawberry fruit with a trace of lifted dark cherry without straying into the hard, nervy kirsch characters of so many of its peers. The finish is equally enjoyable, with a tangy crisp finish framed in a similarly neat, sculptured oak frame.

Jancis Robinson MW 16.5+/20
Dark crimson. Heady graphite notes on the nose. Very opulent and ripe though still fresh. Just on the cusp of being too sweet, this should please many drinkers looking for successful modern-style St-Émilion. Slightly grainy drying tannins on the end. jancis_robinson_mw MW - JancisRobinson.com - Apr 2015

85% Merlot, 15% Cabernet. Restrained and undemonstrative but less power and more refinement this year. Fresh and minerally with a clean persistent finish. A Pavie-Macquin with a feminine edge.

The 2014 Pavie-Macquin has a concentrated bouquet with layers of blackberry and raspberry coulis, infused with potpourri and incense. There is something almost forbidding about the aromatics at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with supple ripe red berry fruit, a fine line of acidity, although it feels a little soft on the finish when I needed more precision and backbone. Let's see how this ages in bottle, because I suspect that it will gain more density and structure with 2-3 years of bottle age.Neil Martin - 31/03/2017
About this wine
Merlot
The most widely planted grape in Bordeaux and a grape that has been on a relentless expansion drive throughout the world in the last decade. Merlot is adaptable to most soils and is relatively simple to cultivate. It is a vigorous naturally high yielding grape that requires savage pruning - over-cropped Merlot-based wines are dilute and bland. It is also vital to pick at optimum ripeness as Merlot can quickly lose its varietal characteristics if harvested overripe.

Chateau Pavie Macquin
Château Pavie Macquin, a St Emilion Premier Grand Cru Classé (B), is a property that has hit form in the last 10 years and is now producing first-class wines. It is located east of the village of St Emilion and its 15 hectares of vineyards are located on the Côte Pavie, adjacent to the vineyards of Pavie, Pavie-Decesse and Troplong-Mondot. Since 1990 Nicholas Thienpoint Château has been in charge of the property. A pioneer of the Right Bank, Nicolas Thienpoint first pushed the boundaries with organic then biodynamic winemaking in developing the property’s style, helped by his soon-to-be-famous maître de chai, Stéphane Derenoncourt, who joined the team in 1990 and still consults today. Pavie Macquin's wine is a blend of 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon.
