2014 Côte-Rôtie Reserve, Domaine Michel et Stéphane Ogier

Description

Surely the most exciting wine of the offer, Stéphane’s Réserve marks a significant departure for this great estate. The concentration and depth of fruit far exceed expectations for the year; the poise, elegance and harmony, however, are all that one would expect from this address.

The fruit is sourced from parcels across the sectors traditionally known as Blonde and Brune, representing a snapshot of the appellation’s future and some of the names that will become more and more familiar, with a distinctly Burgundian flavour evidenced.
Drink 2018-2024.

Coming from the lieux-dits of Viallière, Champon, Lancement, Cote Bodin and Bertholon (which is slanted firmly towards the Cote Brune side of the appellation), the 2014 Cote Rotie Reserve exhibits fabulous notes of cassis, cured meats, black raspberries and spice.

Medium to full-bodied, elegant and seamless, it has seriously high quality tannin, no hard edges and a great finish, all of which suggest it will drink nicely on release, yet also evolve gracefully.

Critics reviews

Jeb Dunnuck 93/100
There are under 200 cases of the 2014 Cte Rtie Reserve, which got all the grapes that would normally go into the Lancement and Belle Helene cuves. Its deep ruby color is followed by a layered, complex, medium-bodied and nicely concentrated red that has terrific notes of dried flowers, blackcurrants, blackberries, black olives and Asian spices. Its tannin quality it first rate, and this classic 2014 has both elegance and richness. Drink it anytime over the coming decade or more.jeb_dunnuck - 28/12/2016

About this wine

Syrah/Shiraz

A noble black grape variety grown particularly in the Northern Rhône where it produces the great red wines of Hermitage, Cote Rôtie and Cornas, and in Australia where it produces wines of startling depth and intensity. Reasonably low yields are a crucial factor for quality as is picking at optimum ripeness. Its heartland, Hermitage and Côte Rôtie, consists of 270 hectares of steeply terraced vineyards producing wines that brim with pepper, spices, tar and black treacle when young. After 5-10 years they become smooth and velvety with pronounced fruit characteristics of damsons, raspberries, blackcurrants and loganberries. It is now grown extensively in the Southern Rhône where it is blended with Grenache and Mourvèdre to produce the great red wines of Châteauneuf du Pape and Gigondas amongst others. Its spiritual home in Australia is the Barossa Valley, where there are plantings dating as far back as 1860. Australian Shiraz tends to be sweeter than its Northern Rhône counterpart and the best examples are redolent of new leather, dark chocolate, liquorice, and prunes and display a blackcurrant lusciousness. South African producers such as Eben Sadie are now producing world- class Shiraz wines that represent astonishing value for money.
