Description
Burgundy 2009 Best Buys - Outside The Box
The southernmost appellation of the Côte d'Or deserves to be better known for its characterful reds – especially those from perfectly exposed vineyards, such as Le Croix Moines. Enjoy the balance of rich red fruit and ripe tannins for structure.
(Jasper Morris MW, BBR Buyer)
This muscular wine is from a very small but really quite special vineyard, high on the hillside in Maranges. Look not for delicacy but appreciate the compact, chunky body and the density of the fruit.

The 2009 Maranges Le Croix aux Moines is gorgeous. It shows wonderful freshness and vibrancy in its dark red fruit, spices and licorice. All the elements are beautifully balanced in this harmonious, poised Burgundy. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2017.antonio_galloni - 26/04/2012

About this wine
Pinot Noir
Pinot Noir is probably the most frustrating, and at times infuriating, wine grape in the world. However when it is successful, it can produce some of the most sublime wines known to man. This thin-skinned grape which grows in small, tight bunches performs well on well-drained, deepish limestone based subsoils as are found on Burgundy's Côte d'Or. Pinot Noir is more susceptible than other varieties to over cropping - concentration and varietal character disappear rapidly if yields are excessive and yields as little as 25hl/ha are the norm for some climats of the Côte d`Or.
