2005 Château de Fonbel, St Emilion, Bordeaux

Description

We are somewhat surprised and 100% delighted at Monsieur Alain Vauthier's (The Owner of St Emilions greatest wine, Ch. Ausone) decision to release this brilliant Chateau En Primeur. When we tasted this, it was followed next by Chapelle de Ausone and then Ausone itself. Fonbel held its own like David to Goliath. It was brilliant and at this price a total bargain. Rich sweet, ripe blackberry fruit. Dense with soft tannins and glorious St Emilion soft appeal and Ausone majesty. Drink from arrival in 2008 to 2015

Critics reviews

James Suckling 89/100
Has subtle violet and blackberry aromas, with a hint of ripe plum. Full- to medium-bodied, with pretty tannins and a fruity, subtle finish. There's lots of Indian spices as well. Refined. Best after 2010. 10,000 cases made james_suckling - Wine Spectator - 2008

A sleeper of the vintage, Ausone’s proprietor, Alain Vauthier, produces this beautiful St.-Emilion. It possesses a sumptuous bouquet of crushed rocks, incense, raspberries, boysenberries, and a touch of cherries. Some earthiness intrudes on the palate, but it adds complexity and nuance rather than detracting from the wine’s beautiful fruit. Medium to full-bodied, with admirable elegance and purity as well as ripe tannin, this beauty can be enjoyed over the next 15 years. robert_parker - Wine Advocate - Apr-2008
