Description
I tasted the 1998, alongside the 1996 and was surprised to find myself preferring the 1998. A vivid and lively champagne, the 1998 Krug was remarkable approachable. The typical notes of brioche, white apples and apple strudel on the nose followed seamlessly onto the palate. On the palate layer upon layer of flavours ranging from crisp apples to roasted hazelnuts and minerally chalkiness gently developed into a noticeably long finish with a touch of smoke. Very impressive.

Jancis Robinson MW 18/20
Lemony tight on the nose. Very taut and some greenness but correct and more focused than, say, the 1995. More in the style of the 1996. jancis_robinson_mw MW, JancisRobinson.com - Nov 08

Krug's 1998 Brut Vintage is an excellent choice for drinking today, as the classic Krug style is rich, alive and totally vivid. Honey, almonds, smoke, graphite and dried apricots are some of the many aromas and flavors found in this rich, enveloping Champagne. A wine of texture and depth, the 1998 impresses for its vinous personality and terrific balance. Lively veins of underlying acidity suggest the 1998 will drink well for many years to follow. This is one of the best bottles of the 1998 I have ever tasted. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2038.antonio_galloni - 31/10/2012
About this wine
Krug
Krug was established in 1843 and has since specialised in producing only prestige and specialised champagnes. Krug is the only firm still producing all its champagne in small oak casks, an essential element for developing Krug's intense bouquet and complex flavours. Today, Henri, Rémi and Olivier Krug, who supervise every step of production, tasting and blending, represent the 5th and 6th generations. With long periods of maturation (6-8 years), Krug champagne continues to age gracefully after release, developing an intensely rich, nutty flavour whilst remaining remarkably fresh. Krug`s finest champagne is Clos du Mesnil, a 100%-Chardonnay based champagne that comes from a small walled vineyard at Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. It is one of the world`s greatest Blanc de Blanc champagnes.
