Critics reviews

Neal Martin MW 93/100
This has an ethereal nose with an excellent lift with secondary aromas beginning to come through, with blackberry leaf, dried orange peel, and a touch of walnut and honey. Expressive, if too open-knit. There is a hint of glue in the background, but it does not get in the way. The palate is well-balanced and quite suave, with beautiful tannins, subtle hints of cloves, dried herbs, and a touch of capsicum with an elegant, supple finish. Excellent. Drink now - 2035Neil Martin, Wine Advocate (May 2009)

Highly recommended in 1998 and the same again this time round. It's deep and dark with lovely opulent plums, cherries and lifted blossom aromas. It's rich and luxurious with dense, ripe, minty fruit with firm tannins to back it up. A wonderfully solid finish. Complete.Drink 2014 - 2050Richard Mayson, Decanter.com (October 2014)

Spicy nose and amazingly sweet on the palate – quite treacley. Some tar too. Lots of potential with macerated raisin flavours. Lots of acidity! I seriously misjudged this wine in a big port tasting four years ago. jancis_robinson_mw MW - JancisRobinson.com – December 2008)

Paul Sym thinks this is one of their greatest ports ever.Dark blackish crimson. Rich and sumptuous. Chestnuts and super-round. Very pure and polished tannins. Lovely now. Drink 2007 - 2030jancis_robinson_mw MW, JancisRobinson.com (October 2016)

About this wine

Quinta do Vesuvio

As a general rule, the further one travels up the Douro, the better the quality and concentration found in the fruit, though as a result of the drier conditions, the quantities are greatly reduced. The Symington Group took the plunge in 1989 and purchased Quinta do Vesuvio, which despite its remoteness, has to be the grandest quinta, with about 400 hectares of which about 100 are covered with the finest vines.

Porto

Porto

Rich, saccharine, intensely-flavoured and, at their best, wonderfully majestic and harmonious, these are wines to be savoured on their own, or with a fine chunk of cheese after a meal. Port comes from the stunning Douro region of Portugal, about 50 miles east of Oporto, and is made in two different styles: bottle-aged and cask-aged.
