Taylor's, Platinum Jubilee, Very Very Old Tawny Port, Portugal

Description

Our dear friends at Taylor’s have crafted a truly extraordinary Tawny Port to commemorate the remarkable reign of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, marking an impressive 70 years on the throne. The Taylor’s Platinum Jubilee is a masterful blend of very old Tawny Ports, with some dating back over 90 years. Pinpointing the exact age of the elixir is difficult, but we can safely say that it has gracefully matured for at least as long as Her Majesty’s reign.

This majestic wine glows like burnished copper in the glass, a joy just to look at and bask in a heady nose of marzipan, orange peel and honey notes. The wine’s assured intensity is truly striking and carries the rich, bold fruit with underlying hints of ginger, spice, and sultanas – a huge array of flavours, making this a remarkable and very memorable wine. An aged Tawny like this will not improve further in bottle, but it will happily last a fortnight once opened.

Critics reviews

Brownish-tawny colour in the glass with a hint of green. Very intense and layered on the nose with notes of cinnamon, roasted coffee, marzipan and treacle. The palate has a rich viscosity and matched intensity from the nose. The flavour profile follows from the nose, but more of a dried citrus and cherry tone pushes through to match the spice. Succulent yet fine with mouth-watering acidity. Very long and very fine.Drink 2022 - 2032tom_parker_mw, JancisRobinson.com (December 2022)

About this wine

Touriga Nacional

Touriga Nacional is a highly regarded grape variety indigenous to Portugal, often considered the country's flagship red grape. Known for its intense aromas and flavours, the wines typically feature dark fruits such as blackberries, blueberries, and plums, along with distinctive floral notes like violets and hints of spices, herbs, and chocolate. These generally have high tannin levels, good acidity, and deep, dark colour, contributing to their structure and ageing potential.

Porto

Porto

Rich, saccharine, intensely-flavoured and, at their best, wonderfully majestic and harmonious, these are wines to be savoured on their own, or with a fine chunk of cheese after a meal. Port comes from the stunning Douro region of Portugal, about 50 miles east of Oporto, and is made in two different styles: bottle-aged and cask-aged.
