2023 Hamilton Russell Vineyards, Pinot Noir, Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, South Africa

Description

The 2023 vintage is further proof that the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley is one of the finest places on earth to grow Pinot Noir. The maritime climate is heavily influenced by the cooling Benguela current, as a result, the wines are fresh, vibrant and beautifully balanced, nowhere are these characteristics more evident than the 2023 Pinot Noir from Hamilton Russell. Beautifully integrated oak from Francois Freres makes way on the nose, revealing aromas of red berries and savoury, spicy, earthy notes. The palate shows cranberries and strawberries, spice and herbs, while ripe tannins add a gentle grip. A long and sapid finish round off this outstanding, complex Pinot Noir.

About this wine

Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir is probably the most frustrating, and at times infuriating, wine grape in the world. However when it is successful, it can produce some of the most sublime wines known to man. This thin-skinned grape which grows in small, tight bunches performs well on well-drained, deepish limestone based subsoils as are found on Burgundy's Côte d'Or. Pinot Noir is more susceptible than other varieties to over cropping - concentration and varietal character disappear rapidly if yields are excessive and yields as little as 25hl/ha are the norm for some climats of the Côte d`Or.
