Description
To reduce packaging waste, this wine is capsule-free.
Lifted aromas of red currant, pomegranate, red cherry and red plum. The secondary aromas of spice and earthy, such as clove, star anise, bay leaf and wild thyme add complexity. The palate is medium to full-bodied with a dense core of plush red-berried fruits whilst leaning towards the savoury side. Firm tannins envelope the mouth and provide depth and a plushness with an elongated finish. The 2021 Steading is indicative of the harvest from low yielding old bush vines that produced high quality wines.

This 2021 The Steading, a Grenache blend made with fruit from vines averaging 70 years of age, is very attractive and well-made with energetic aromas of black cherry, spice, new leather and dried herbs. The 2021 is well composed, with an initial impact of primary dark cherry and spice before more meaty and earthy tones emerge. It is tight right now, but a lingering finish and strong seam of fine tannins suggest it will flower beautifully in bottle.Torbreck has been an important modern fixture since David Powell founded the winery almost thirty years ago. It rode atop the wave of powerful Barossa Shiraz into the USA and Europe with Powell at the helm and achieved incredible success. While David Powell is no longer a part of the business, Torbreck remains a leader, potentially in its best form yet under new owner Pete Knight and Chief Winemaker Ian Hongell. Fruit is sourced from across Barossa with strong sub-regional integrity maintained across the range.Drink 2028 - 2035Angus Hughson, Vinous.com.com (June 2023)

The 2021 The Steading is incredibly sweet on the nose: summer raspberries, blood plums, black cherry, licorice, star anise, some cardamom and chewing tobacco. This offers insane value for money, but then, I feel like it has been that price for at least a decade, so it has been an insane value for a long time. This is reliable, delicious, complex, plush/generous and, through the lens of this lovely cool vintage, a superstar. The best yet.Drink 2023 - 2033Erin Larkin, Wine Advocate (April 2023)

About this wine
Grenache/Garnacha
Grenache (Noir) is widely grown and comes in a variety of styles. Believed to originate in Spain, it was, in the late 20th century, the most widely planted black grape variety in the world. Today it hovers around seventh in the pecking order. It tends to produce very fruity, rich wines that can range quite widely in their level of tannin. In many regions – most famously the Southern Rhône, where it complements Syrah and Mourvèdre, among other grapes – it adds backbone and colour to blends, but some of the most notable Châteauneuf du Pape producers (such as Château Rayas) make 100 percent Grenache wines. The grape is a component in many wines of the Languedoc (where you’ll also find its lighter-coloured forms, Grenache Gris and Blanc) and is responsible for much southern French rosé – taking the lead in most Provence styles. Found all over Spain as Garnacha Tinta (spelt Garnaxa in Catalonia), the grape variety is increasingly detailed on wine labels there. Along with Tempranillo, it forms the majority of the blend for Rioja’s reds and has been adopted widely in Navarra, where it produces lighter styles of red and rosado (rosé). It can also be found operating under a pseudonym, Cannonau, in Sardinia.
Torbreck
Torbreck was established in 1994 and is located at Marananga on the western ridge of the Barossa Valley. It is named after a forest situated just south of Inverness in the Highlands of Scotland. Founded by David Powell, a former lumberjack who worked in various vineyards to hone his oenological skills, Torbreck’s first releases in 1997 of a 1995 Runrig (Shiraz/Viognier) and 1996 The Steading (Grenache/Mataro/Shiraz) were greeted with rapturous applause by critics and connoisseurs alike. The winery is overseen by Senior Winemaker Craig Isbel and his team. The overwhelming majority of his vines are dry-grown, nearly all are 100 - 165 years old and are tended and harvested by hand. The wines have an extraordinary combination of power, intensity, complexity and great finesse.
