Description
I’ve been a fan of The Chocolate Block for as long as I can remember, with especially fond and hazy memories of a few glasses (too many) at Reuben’s in Franschhoek, so it’s always a treat when the new vintage lands. As always, Syrah dominates the blend with its tapestry of rich, dark fruit, tapenade and bacon fat at the forefront. Grenache and Cinsault respectively add a zippy red fruit and savoury undertone, with Cabernet Sauvignon adding some structure and a dash of Viognier an aromatic zing as it does in Côte-Rôtie. It’s easy to see why this is one of the best sellers in South Africa and further afield. Simply put it’s delicious. A rare combination of crowd pleasing and serious enough for the cellar.
