2019 Meursault-Perrières, 1er Cru, Michel Bouzereau & Fils, Burgundy

Description

The journey through the Meursault Premiers Crus finishes here, with a powerhouse of a wine. As with Charmes and Genevrières, there are upper and lower sections; the domaine is represented in both, although the upper dominates. The ripeness of the fruit is almost glossy, but then the textures wind in on themselves, harnessing the power by freshness. Drink 2024-2040.

A rather fuller pale yellow than its stablemates. A slight vegetal overlay on the nose which soon blows off. Heat on the stones? A rich deep mouthful here, the extra weight which you expect from Perrières, and while there is some heat this vineyard can carry it off. For now the Genevrières has the edge in terms of refinement. The 2019 Meursault Perrières 1er Cru has a tight, focused nose of gunflint and gravel, expressing this noble vineyard extremely well in the sense that it could not be from anywhere else. The palate is well balanced with touches of orange peel, ginger and light savory notes on the entry. Quite a phenolically driven Perrières, it has wonderful length, even if it does not quite have the clinical precision of, say, Dominique Lafon’s own Perrières. Still, this is a well-crafted, quite sublime Meursault. Neil Martin, Vinous.com

Chardonnay is often seen as the king of white wine grapes and one of the most widely planted in the world It is suited to a wide variety of soils, though it excels in soils with a high limestone content as found in Champagne, Chablis, and the Côte D`Or. Burgundy is Chardonnay's spiritual home and the best White Burgundies are dry, rich, honeyed wines with marvellous poise, elegance and balance. They are unquestionably the finest dry white wines in the world. Chardonnay plays a crucial role in the Champagne blend, providing structure and finesse, and is the sole grape in Blanc de Blancs.
